These are the potted 5 gallon mulberries.

Pakistani Mulberry Trees are large, vigorous, fast-growing trees which are disease and drought resistant. A common fruit in and around the Middle East. Mulberries are eaten raw, and used in pies, jams, jellies and beverages. The Pakistani variety produces long (up to 3 inches), firm, sweet, red-to-deep-purple colored fruit with non-staining juice. The fruits ripen in stages over several weeks, providing an extended, delicious harvest.

These are female mulberry trees which do not produce pollens and do not conflict with Phoenix municipal codes.

Occasionally we have Pakistani white mulberry trees, but will not know until mid-January

Q: I am interested in this mulberry. I have a small backyard that faces north of my house. I would like to know if you suggest 2 trees in order for it to produce fruit? I have noticed that my neighbor 8 houses away has a no fruiting mulberry. Please advice. Thank you.

A: We only bring in the fruiting mulberry variety which is the female tree. The Pakistani Mulberry can grow to be a large tree rather quickly. If your yard is small, two might be two many - however, if you manage the size through pruning it can be maintained to a more desirable size. This tree is one of our recommended shade trees because of how well and how fast it grows.
Another alternative for you might be the Dwarf Black Mulberry Bush. This has smaller leaves and smaller fruit, and can be easier than the Pakistani to keep small, though it can grow quite tall as well - and it is one of Greg's Favorites because of it's amazing flavor.

Q: Can the size of this tree be controlled? I imagine I cannot add it to my stone fruit hedge?

A: All trees can controlled in size. It is just a matter of how much effort is involved to keep a certain tree the size you want. This particular tree is a fast grower.
This is a great tree for a yard that needs shade quickly, or a section of yard that would benefit from a mid-to-upper story canopy. You can allow this tree to be full and bushy - which will allow fruit to grow at multiple levels, or train it to grow to a typical upper story tree for shade (this leaves a nice selection of fruit for the birds).
If you want this to be a smaller tree (small being relative), then plan to have the time to prune it regularly, maybe twice a year, and keep up the pruning maintenance. This could help you keep the tree in an 8 foot height range.

Q: How far away from walls and structures should they be planted to be mindful of their invasive roots?

A: Mulberries have prolific roots. I planted one 1 food away from the house at one point and never had a problem. So it is really up to you. To be safe if you are concerned I would say 4 feet.

Q: I have a follow-up question (please feel free to combine your response): My understanding is that Black/Red variety of Pakistan Mulberry stains. Your information says 'non-staining' juice. Could you please confirm which one is non-staining. Thanks.

A: Great question. According to the our grower Dave Wilson Nursery, the Pakistan Fruiting Mulberry has red to black fruit with non-staining juice. My fingers do show a little color when I pick the berries, but it washes off with soap.

A: We typically get the red/black variety. One year we got some white mulberries, but that was not our usual experience.
