Koroneiki is a Greek variety with small fruit and excellent oil. Originally cultivated on the plains, lower hillsides and coastal areas of Crete where the climate is relatively warm. Adapts well in high density orchards, early producer. Very small fruit size. Excellent oil quality with very high polyphenols. Fruit yield is high with a slight tendency for alternate bearing.

Q: How close do these olives need to be to assist one another in production?

A: The general consensus on olive trees is that they should be spaced between 5 feet for a high density grove or 18 feet for a traditional grove. Some research seems to indicate a 28 foot distance works as well with acceptable pollination taking place. If this spacing does not fit your plans, additional sources indicate the pollen from one olive can be manually transferred to another tree as done by some olive and date growers. We recommend doing additional research on this method to determine if this method will work for you if higher production is desired.

Q: I have ordered one olive but have read that there should be two. Is this true? Is this tree adaptable to being in a pot? I should have gotten these answers sooner. Thanks.

A: Yes, Olive trees do very well in a pot if they have well draining soil, and can survive a number of years in a pot, although they will ultimately need to be planted in the ground to survive.. I would recommend our cactus mix for that purpose. The Koroneki does not need another olive, however the Manzanillo does do better with a second like the Koroneiki.

Q: Hello and is this a tree I could grow in a barrel in my patio garden? How large will it grow to? Does it take years for it to bear fruit and are multiple needed? Thank you so much.

A: Olive trees do very well in a pot or large barrel can survive a number of years in a pot, if they have well draining soil. We recommend our cactus mix for that purpose. The Koroneki does not need another olive to pollinate. It is the same for the Manzanillo, however it does do better with a second different variety nearby.

Q: I thought we weren’t allowed fruit bearing olive in the Phoenix area? We’d love to grow, harvest and prepare our own olives.

A: Since 1986, a Phoenix city ordinance has declared selling and planting male olive trees a public nuisance, citing “large amounts of allergenic, airborne pollens that are noxious and contribute to human disease and health problems.” We only bring in the female olive trees.
