This year we found a better deal by buying the ton and saving money.  

Worm castings are the richest natural "fertilizer"* known to humans. That's right: as little as a tablespoon of pure worm castings provides enough organic plant nutrients to feed a 6" potted plant for more than two months. Worm castings stimulate plant growth more than any other natural product on the market. Unlike animal manure and artificial fertilizers it is absorbed easily and immediately by plants. Worm Castings do not just stimulate plant growth: because of its texture, they also enhance the ability of your soil to retain water and inhibit root diseases such as root rot.   Best of all - we have selected our source from a local vendor who takes care of her worms in the best way.

NOTE: Fresh worm castings offer the best bioorganic content, so we recommend using the castings within a few weeks of purchase, and yet if stored in a cool, dark place they can retain life for up to 4-6 months. However even dried out worm castings offer nutrients, so if you find a bag you forgot to use, go ahead and give it to a tree or garden. Refrigeration not recommended. 

*Technically there is no way to guarantee the percentages of nutrient content in worm castings as this is dependent on the food source for each batch.  

RECOMMENDATIONS
FOR TREES: Apply 2 pounds per tree in the planting hole. Reapply 1 pound per caliper inch of trunk when fertilizing.
FOR GARDENS: Apply 5 pounds per 4' by 4' garden bed each season before planting seeds or transplants. 

Here is a list of benefits of worm castings:

  2. increase moisture infiltration and permeability, and reduces bulk density of heavy soils improving moisture infiltration rates, reducing erosion and runoff
  3. improve the moisture holding capacity of light soils reducing water loss and nutrient leaching

  5. aid the proliferation of soil microbes that benefit plant and flower growth
  6. supply beneficial microorganisms to soils and growing media
  7. encourage vigorous root growth
  8. allow plants to more effectively utilize nutrients
  9. enable soils to retain nutrients longer
  10. contains humus assisting in soil aggregation and making nutrients more available for plant uptake
  11. and finally, high quality worm castings buffer soil pH since they tend to run pH neutral
