Drip Tape

Drip tape is the simplest way to water garden beds and rows evenly while using far less water than a hose or sprinkler. It is a flat, thin-walled line with emitters built in every few inches. Lay it on the soil, cover it with mulch, and it delivers water straight to the roots, where your plants need it.

Drip tape connects with simple barbs to standard poly tubing, and it must run at low pressure (10 PSI or less), so always use a pressure reducer.

Farmer Greg has used drip tape in his own Phoenix garden for years. Everything here is what he relies on to keep vegetables and young trees alive through desert summers, and it works just as well in any climate.

What you need to set up drip tape

  • Drip tape roll: 100 ft of tape for beds and rows.
  • Pressure reducer (10 PSI): required. Drip tape is rated to 10 PSI, so a reducer protects the system.
  • Chlorine filter: keeps city water kind to your soil life.
  • Fittings: barbs, sub-zone valves, end caps, couplings and goof plugs to connect, control and repair your lines.
